That’s not until after 3 years so the solution is to lease it.

The oil pan is plastic and I’ve seen at least 3 break at the track.
It’s a cat that is amazing until it is awful.
It’s like having a great girlfriend (or boyfriend or whatever) who is amazing, but you know they are eventually going to cheat on you or burn down your house. Things are great until they aren’t.
It’s a grownup STi, Focus RS, or Type R. But if you’re in the market for one of these, do you really want grownup? If you want a mature car, do you want to deal with the foolishness that underlies the Golf R? Plus, it’s a Golf that’s over $40k.
I think all the faults add character. But I don’t really think it beats out its competitors at anything other than luxury and then it’s competing with luxury cars that have it beat there.

Yes, same platform (or at least they used to be) but at least you can tell people you drive an Audi and you don’t have to buy a vape.

Yup, these other ones look like something Rotaform would sell. Which is probably the point

2015s had these wheels.

What do you mean you’ve had a bunch calls, officer? I’m just reviewing a car here.

Did you cross shop it with a Golf R by any chance?
![]() 08/07/2018 at 18:38 |

I would certainly like one, but that’ll never happen. Something something must be nice

Doug is correct, people who think Golf
R is not best hatch are wrong.

Can you get a S3 with a sportback?

Please, tell me again how nice and quiet and well built the interior of the WRX or RS is?
And do go on about how often you’ll get stopped driving any of the cars you mentioned because the police assume you’re speeding or are looking for your obnoxious wing to tag you.
All of those are great cars, true. But none are perfect, and have their own glaring faults. The Golf R is one of many options in the market. And it is a fantastic car and is far more worthy than being insulted as merely a $40K Golf.
If you’re going to say that, then the Type R is a $40k Civic, the RS is a $45k Focus, and the WRX is an overpriced Impreza.
How about you celebrate that we have choices rather than shit all over the one you dislike most.

No. I crossshopped it with BMWs. (See one of my first posts on oppo).

I’m with you; I want an AWD hot hatch to feed my inner 16 year old; and for me the RS does that with room to spare. The Golf R, I respect it and I’m sure it’s great but compared to the competition; I dunno.

That’s what I did. I actually wanted the Golf R - since my wife and I were planning on starting a family, I knew my BRZ would never fit a rear-facing seat and allow someone to still ride up front, so I started researching a new ride. Test drove lots of things - STi, Golf R, GTI, FoRS, FoST, but time and time again I came back to the Golf R. Nicest interior of the lot by far, available DSG so my wife could drive it, most comfortable and quiet. And, of the VAG stuff, they’re reasonably reliable. Early 2015 builds can have issues with the Haldex and turbo, but both were sorted by mid- late 2015.
So I started searching for a Golf R, lightly used. As used cars, they don’t seem to be a great value - residual values hang up there, like they do with the WRX and STi. What drops are the S3's - and I found a great late 2015 build for well under $30k last summer.

Overseas, but not in the US.

My understanding was that VAG got a good but more reliable in the past decade
